NBA Math Hoops Victorian State Tournament Excursion

On the 17th of August, twenty grade 3 and 4 students represented Silverton Primary School at the very first NBA Math Hoops Victorian State Tournament! The students had lots of fun competing against other schools and each other in the NBA-themed mathematics board game.

The grade 3 and 4 students that represented Silverton Primary School were Peter, Arham, Isla, Owen, Shreeji, Vraj, Amelia, Jacob, Riaan, Dominic, Louis, David O, David L, Mohamed A, Bahjat, Munir, Johan, Sahel, Isaak and Kevinh H. Students played the NBA-themed board game in pairs. The game works by rolling two dice and adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing the numbers. These answers are scattered as 2 point and 3 point spots on the board. Students have to choose a spot they want to shoot from based on the answers they calculated. Each spot has a number and a colour. The colour will tell you what player to shoot with. Every team has 5 players in total. You can get 2 points or 3 points by spinning a spinner and seeing if you land within the orange area (for 2 points) and stripped area (for 3 points).

The students played in teams of 2. One student would roll the dice and calculate the answers. The other student had to select a spot to shoot from and then spin the spinner on the chosen player they want to score with. Students are only given 30 seconds after they've rolled their dice to complete the maths, choose a spot to shoot from and then spin the spinner. Our lovely Silverton students showed a high level of sportsmanship throughout the day and tried their best to score as many points as possible. All teams played three games at the start of the day. The top 8 teams would be chosen based on how many wins students got. We want to say a huge congratulations to Isla and Owen for making it through to the top 8! Here are some of the photos taken from the day!
