On Thursday morning a small but powerful group of students (5) left our school to compete in another chess zonal competition at Hampton Park Primary. I was concerned at first because one of our leading players was sick.
Our showing in this competiton would give me a guide to see if we could defend our top spot in the Southeast region, which we achieved from our last regional competition.
After 7 rounds and many individual matches between our chess stars & Tulliallan Primary (who came third in the state school final last year), it was clear that Silverton came first with a convincing margin of 3 points.
James finished the tournament with perfect score of 7/7. The other students all did very well too. All of our students placed among top 10; a total of 67 students participated.
It was the last preparation competition before the state semifinal where our chess stars will try to qualify for the final major competition of the year.
