Our Silverton students (Raaga, Muxi, Isaa and Alex) competed against 44 other students during the Melbourne South Division tournament in hopes of obtaining the title of division champion! The schools we competed against were Haileybury, Kilvington Grammar, St Peter’s College, Ivanhoe Grammar, Mentone Grammar and Mater Christi College. All players ranged from grade 5 to year 8 and were split into 12 heats (4 students in each heat). The tournament bracket consisted of a heat stage, a time trial stage, a quarter final, a semi-final and a grand finale. Players who accumulated the most points during the heat stage would advance to the quarter finals whilst those who came 2nd had to battle it out in time trials. Only the top 4 students with the fastest lap times were allowed to join the rest in the quarter finals. Both the quarter finals and semi-finals were structured in the same way. The top 2 in each group would keep advancing until only 4 students remained. These 4 students will then have to race against each other in the grand finals to determine who would take home the trophy!
Our Silverton boys took to the stage one heat at a time and placed 1st within their respective groups. This fast-tracked them to the quarter finals and gave them a chance to rest during the time trial stage. With 12 students making it through to the quarter finals by placing 1st and 4 students making it through to the quarter finals by obtaining the fastest lap times during time trials, there are now 16 students left in the tournament. Raaga, Muxi, Isaa and Alex were successful once again in advancing through to the semi-finals alongside two Ivanhoe Grammar students and two St Peter’s College students. By this point, Kilvington Grammar, Mater Christi College, Haileybury and Mentone Grammar have been knocked out of the tournament completely.
With eight students left in the tournament, they were split into two groups for the semi-finals. The two St Peter’s College students and Ivanhoe Grammar students were split across the two groups. Since Silverton Primary School had four students left, Raaga and Isaa were placed together in one group while as Muxi and Isaa were placed together in the other group. The boys were very excited that there was an opportunity for all four of them to meet in the grand finals, but unfortunately that did not happen as Muxi and Isaa were knocked out – only being a few points shy from taking 2nd place in their respective groups. So close! Despite being knocked out, both Muxi and Isaa showed a high level of resilience, sportsmanship and respect for their opponents by congratulating them and giving them a fist bump. The boys immediately switched over to a supportive role and cheered behind Raaga and Alex for the grand finals – which consisted of two Silverton students, one Ivanhoe Grammar student and one St Peter’s College student.
There were many position changes throughout the races with shells flying left, right and centre, but by the end of it all, Raaga from Silverton Primary School came out on top to be crowned the FUSE Cup Mario Kart Melbourne South Division Champion! 2nd place went to St Peter’s College, 3rd place went to Alex from Silverton PS and 4th place went to Ivanhoe Grammar. A huge congratulations to our Silverton students for their amazing display of skill, teamwork, sportsmanship, resilience and support for one another! Special thanks to Dan from The FUSE Cup for giving our students the opportunity to take pride in representing their school in something they share a deep passion for and to Haileybury for being wonderful hosts!Raaga has been invited to play in the state finals at the FUSE Cup E-sport Festival. This is a 2-day event that is located on the Gold Coast! If he manages to win the state finals, he will then play in the national finals the next day. Raaga is the FUSE Cup Mario Kart Australian Champion of 2022 and will be looking to secure a 2nd national title win! Go Raaga!
