We are the FUSE Cup Mario Kart State Champions!

On the 5th of August, 4 students from Silverton Primary School participated in The FUSE Cup's Mario Kart VIC State Tournament. The event consisted of 9 schools with a total of 48 students. With Raaga obtaining the most points in the grand finals, Silverton PS became the state champions of 2022!

The 4 students that represented Silverton PS at the Mario Kart tournament were Muxi, Isaa, Tina and Raaga in Grade 5 and 6. We travelled to Melbourne Girls Grammar where they hosted The FUSE Cup tournament this year. The 9 schools that participated were: Wesley College, Silverton PS, Melbourne Girls Grammar, Ivanhoe Grammar School, Mentone Grammar, Saint Oliver Plunkett PS, Camberwell Girls Grammar School, Columba Catholic PS and Huntingtower School.

With a total of 48 students participating, students were divided into their heats; totalling to 16 groups of 3. These students would then race against each other and after 4 races, whoever has the most points will move on to the knockout stages. Tina, Muxi and Raaga advanced through to the next round while Isaa only lost out by 3 points after a very close last race. By the end of the heat stages, the top 16 students were finally determined with 2 of them representing Mentone Grammar, 1 of them representing Melbourne Girls Grammar, 1 of them representing Columba Catholic PS and an impressive 8 students representing Ivanhoe Grammar School.

During the knockout stages, students were divided into 4 groups of 4. Raaga played in group 1, Tina played in group 2 and Muxi played in group 3. Isaa continued to support and cheer on his teammates during their races. Raaga and Muxi make it through their knockout stages while Tina and another student from Ivanhoe Grammar had to participate in an extra race as a tiebreaker. Unfortunately Tina lost out by only a fraction of a second to her opponent. With another Ivanhoe Grammar student also moving through in group 4. The grand finals consisted of 2 Silverton students and 2 Ivanhoe Grammar students.

The top 4 students were given a wireless speaker as a prize for making it to the grand finals before they got ready for their races. Although a majority of schools were no longer participating in the races, there was a great level of sportsmanship and support for one another as students began cheering for team Silverton or team Ivanhoe. Students played the last 4 races on Star Cup. With only 4 students left in the competition, each map was filled with many position changes and close calls. The pressure was on in the last map and after a lot of cheering and screaming near the last stretch, Raaga managed to win the tournament with a total of 49 points, followed by the 2 Ivanhoe students getting 45 and 38 points and Muxi getting 35 points.

We would like to say a huge congratulations to Raaga and Muxi for making it to the grand finals and a special congratulations to Raaga for his excellent driving and critical thinking skills during his races which ultimately led to a stunning victory! All 4 students from Silverton showed a high level of sportsmanship throughout the whole day and should be proud of how supportive they were of each other! I'd like to also thank Melbourne Girls Grammar for hosting the tournament at their school and for The FUSE Cup giving our students the opportunity to play as well as learn about digital wellbeing and positive gaming behaviours in-between the exhilerating races!
