We understand for many families restrictions on social activities, home schooling and interactions during lockdown poses a range of challenges, particularly when it comes to keeping our kids safe and happy. Here are 7 tips to try at home to best support our children.
TIP 1- KEEP CHILDREN ORGANISED
Make a schedule and keep to a routine that works for you and your family. Plan a daily or weekly schedule together, or give them the chance to create one for themselves with time to learn, eat, rest, help with chores and play!
TIP 2- KEEP CHILDREN LEARNING
Encourage your children to attend all of their lessons and stay connected with their teachers and friends through class meetings. Staying connected to school will help children navigate this challenging time.
TIP 3- KEEP CHILDREN SAFE ONLINE
Children need to use computers and technology for their education, entertainment and to stay connected with friends and families. During this time, they’ll be using technology more and will have to spend long hours on screens. Check out the cyber safety project for more tips on this. https://cybersafetyproject.com.au/
TIP 4- KEEP CHILDREN ACTIVE
Physical activity is important for children’s health and well-being. It is important our children are having time away from the screen to be active and keep moving. Try a family walk or bike ride.
TIP 5- KEEP CHILDREN BEING CREATVE
Staying at home can quickly become boring and young brains need challenges and opportunities to grow. Keep children’s minds alert and interested by being creative. This could include painting a picture, doing some photography, building a new invention, creating a cubby or building Lego.
TIP 6- MANAGE CHILDRENS FEARS AND CONCERNS
It is a worrying time for all and children particularly need help and reassurance in situations like these. Here are some tools and resources to help explain the situation, keep them calm and reassured and to help you manage and cope too. https://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets/Supporting_your_child_to_cope_with_the_COVID-19_pandemic/
TIP 7- DON’T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF
We all have our days where things can feel overwhelming. This is normal! Just remember to be kind to yourself and know you are doing a great job.
