2024 Newsletter #2

Dear Silverton families,

I wish to start my newsletter by acknowledging the very sad passing of Kye Duclos. Kye was a student at Silverton from 2017 – 2023. He was a beautiful boy who was very much loved by staff and students here at Silverton. He had a love of the outdoors, spending time with his friends pottering around in the garden and with the school chickens. On Year Six camp, he was the expert on all things insects and spiders! Our hearts go out to his parents Jessie and Michael and his sister Isla. On behalf of Silverton, I’d like to thank the community for the way in which they have supported the Duclos family through an extremely challenging time. I know that this support will continue.

Kye had a love of fishing and so some of the children have been leaving special messages or thoughts about Kye on some fish that we have displayed on the school fence.

Facebook

I’d like to remind everyone that our School Council made the decision last year to use our schools Facebook page to showcase some of the many events and programs that the students engage in at our school. This page is open to the public however as a safety measure, we won’t be posting updates from school camps in real time. We will however put some photos up in the weeks following the camps. Any questions, please feel free to ask.

Grade 6 Badges

It was an honour to have Lana Formoso – The Mayor for the City of Greater Dandenong attend our school assembly earlier this Term to present badges to our 2024 Year Six leaders. We really appreciate her visit to Silverton and look forward to welcoming her back in the future.

Interschool Sport

I’d like to congratulate our Year six students for their first few rounds of interschool sport. We have already had some great performances!

Grade 6 Camp

Last week our Year Six students attended Camp Kookaburra. I would like to congratulate them all on the way that they conducted themselves at camp. Thankfully, they were excellent sleepers!! Thank you also to all of the staff who attended the camp. I hope everyone had a restful weekend!! Well deserved!

Silverton Student Committee

Congratulations to all of the students who have been selected as a member of the Silverton Student Committee for 2024. I’m sure you will all make a valuable contribution to the school in your role this year.

Thank you

I would like to say thank you to the Sandown Park Hotel, Bunnings (Springvale) & Salon of Beauty for their generous financial contributions that will be put to good use in the 2024 school year.

Canteen

A reminder that the school canteen is now being run by Bocca Foods. Orders need to be made online by 9:30am each morning. I would encourage families to use the canteen as you have done in previous years so we can ensure that this service continues.

Loretta

Finally, it is with heavy heart that I wish to inform the school community of the sad passing of Loretta Sutherland. Loretta was the Assistant Principal at Silverton Primary School from 2010 to 2016. She was a beautiful person, an excellent leader and a dear friend to many in our community. Loretta had recently become unwell however her health deteriorated much faster than any of us had anticipated. Our heartfelt sympathies to Loretta’s husband Greg and the rest of her family.

Once again, thank you for your ongoing support.

Thank you,

Mark Pollard
Principal

    Mobile Phones

Silverton Primary School believes the teaching of cybersafety and responsible online behaviour is essential in the lives of students and is best taught in partnership between home and school. Safe and responsible behaviour is explicitly taught at our school and parents/carers are requested to reinforce this behaviour at home. This Term, we have reminded students about the appropriate use of mobile phones and devices. Students must hand any privately owned mobile devices (eg. mobile phone) to the office at the beginning of the school day to be locked away for the duration of the school day. Students must use their smart watch appropriately. This means they will not send, receive or read text messages, make or receive phone calls, or use the camera function on my smart watch. Note that this is a Ministerial policy formally issued by the Minister for Education under section 5.2.1(2)(b) of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic). Maloga Art Incursion

On February 26th Shanai Kellett ran an art workshop with some of our Grade Five students. Shanai, an Aboriginal Artist and primary school teacher, shared her knowledge and examples of her own art and accomplishments, including the design of both the Carlton 2022 Indigenous Guernsey and the Melbourne Storm Indigenous Jersey in 2023.

The students who participated enjoyed listening to Shanai’s stories and using some of the symbols in their own art pieces which will be put on display at school.
