2023 Newsletter EOY

Dear Parents/Carers,

As our year draws close to an end, this will be our final newsletter for the 2023 school year.

Our Year Two students had a great night at the Sleepover on the 9th Nov. A big thank you to the staff who helped in the preparation and running of the event, particularly those staff who slept the night at school! They needed a big coffee the next morning!

We have now held all four 2024 Foundation Transition sessions. It has been great getting to see our new Foundations have their first experiences of big school! Thank you to all of the staff who have helped make this a great start for our little people.

On Friday 24th Nov we had our Term Four House Day and Slime Run! The children had an amazing day. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make the day a success and to the staff for their efforts. We surpassed our fundraising goal which is fantastic! Thank you to all who donated to the event.

Congratulations to our Year 5/6 students for their amazing work on the Coin for a Cause project. It was lovely to see how much effort they put into this and to hear some of their very convincing pitches! Thank you to the LC4 team for their efforts in making this a success.

Congratulations to the students who were involved in the Children’s University program. The students had their Graduation ceremony on 30th Nov. Thank you also to Mr Ong and Mr Keng for helping to run this program for our students.

We held our Performing Arts Showcase and band performances across Monday 4th and Wednesday 6th Dec. Congratulations to all of our students who performed. They did an amazing job! Thank you to Miss Penelope, Miss Molly and Alex for all of their work with our students and also to Dre for his help on both days.

Our Year 1/2 students finally enjoyed a great day at the beach on 4th Dec. A big thank you to all of the staff who went along and to Mrs Blake for her organization. We got there in the end!

Thank you to all who attended Twilight Festival last Thursday. The weather was beautiful, it was a great event and well attended by the community. Thank you to all staff and parent volunteers for your assistance in making this another brilliant Silverton event! Congratulations to our students on their amazing performances!

We have recently run two Internal Transition sessions where the students have spent some time in their 2024 Cohorts. Our Year Six students have also now spent a day at their 2024 Secondary Schools. It’s an exciting time for all students as they get ready for next year.

On Friday, our students will get to spend part of the afternoon in their 2024 classes and meet their teacher.

THANK YOU

Kim and Amanda from our school canteen ‘Kimandas’ have made the decision to finish up at the end of this school year after 13 years running Silverton’s canteen. I would like to thank them for all of their hard work over a long period of time. They will be missed here at Silverton, and we wish them well in whatever it is that they choose to do next.

I will be communicating details of our new canteen system as soon as possible.

As you are aware, from 2024 our Oschare program is being run by Team Kids. We are thrilled that Michelle will be staying on to be the coordinator of the program in its new format. I wanted to say a big thank you to Michelle and acknowledge her for all of the amazing work that she had done for our Silverton run Oschare program since it’s beginning in 1996. What an amazing effort!

I wanted to say congratulations to Sam Golotta and partner David, Melissa Gahan and her partner Chris, on the birth of their little girls recently! Wishing them all the very best.

Congratulations also to Robyn Howard on her successful appointment in the Learning Specialist role at Silverton for 2024.

We have a few staff members who are departing at the end of this school year who I would like to thank and wish them well. Alex Keng, Sarah Devine and Rebecca Storan are moving on to new schools in 2024 and I thank them for all of their hard work at Silverton, we wish them well. Dre is moving into a new role after completing further studies and we wish him all the best.

Ben O’Connor is moving into a different role in 2024. Ben has worked at Silverton since 2017. He has worked across all year levels and in a number of roles at the school. We thank him for all of his hard work over a long period of time and wish him well in his new career.

Mark Blundell is moving into a different role in 2024 after 13 years at Silverton as a classroom teacher and then our PE teacher. Mark has made a significant contribution to the school with his work on Sport, Camps, as a PLC leader and of course our PE teacher. We are excited to see what the next chapter looks like for him. We thank him for everything he has done at Silverton and wish him all the very best.

Ana Kitharidis (Mrs K) has been at Silverton for 34 years and has made the decision to retire from teaching. What an amazing contribution to Silverton she has made as a classroom teacher, as our EAL Coordinator and a member of our leadership team. We thank her for everything that she has done, and whilst we will miss her very much, we are excited about the next chapter for her and we know that we will still see her, particularly if I can convince her to pop in for the occasional CRT day!! Congratulations Ana on an amazing career in education, you can be extremely proud of the difference you have made in the lives of so many students.

Whilst it is always sad to see great people leaving Silverton, we are also very excited to welcome some new teachers to our school in 2024. Congratulations to Tessa McHenry, Maddy Tobin, Martina Duong and Patricia Xiong who have all been successful in gaining a teaching position at Silverton in 2024. The students will already know all of our new teachers as they have all worked as Education Support staff and in our Oshcare Program during 2023.

We are also excited that our new ES staff Skye, Ari, Ash and Lachlan will be staying on at Silverton in 2024. They have already settled in so well and we are lucky to have them as part of our team.

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for your ongoing support to our school community. We have an amazing community here at Silverton and I’m extremely proud of everyone’s efforts this year.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it.

Enjoy the break, be safe, and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone back in the new year.

Mark Pollard

Principal

Parents Association Update

This year the Silverton Primary School Parents Association has worked with the amazing Tammy, Sue, and office administration team, to coordinate events and fundraisers that have both raised funds for Silverton Primary School, and also brought a long list of volunteers together which has been fantastic! There have been so many different people who have worked at each of the events and made them fun and enjoyable for the kids and families in attendance. These have included:

Term 1 - Hot cross bun drive & Easter Raffle - special shout out to Louise Heard for her raffle efforts - thank you!

Term 2 - Open Night BBQ & Mothers Day stall

Term 3 - Fathers Day stall

Term 4 - Production night stall & raffle, election day BBQ, Halloween pizza lunch, Slime Run, and Twilight Festival BBQ & raffle

With an hour or two of time from many volunteers at each event, this has been a small commitment by individuals which has had a big team impact. This year we absolutely smashed our fundraising goal of $10,000, raising more than $14,000!!! This money has already paid for new flagpoles in the courtyard area, and has contributed to more garden and outdoor area improvements - so thank you!!

We hope that you've enjoyed all the events, and look forward to continuing to bring the Silverton community together to have fun and support our school in 2024.

With thanks,

Laura Procter
Parents Association President
