2023 Newsletter #7

Dear Silverton families,

Welcome back as we begin Term Three. I hope everyone enjoyed the two weeks of school holidays. I’d like to start by congratulating our staff and students for the way in which we have begun our Term. It’s been lovely to welcome some new faces to Silverton, both students and staff!

Just a reminder to all families to please ensure that your children are arriving on time for school each day. Students who arrive after 9:00am are missing the opportunity to settle into their school day, receive important instructions from their teachers and to feel ready to learn.

Congratulations to all of our wonderful performers who showcased their talents at our Performing Arts Showcase in the last week of Term Two. I’d like to thank Miss Penelope, Molly, Dre as well as our Performing Arts Captains for all of their work in making this a fantastic Silverton event! Thank you also to all of those who attended the day.

Last week, we had an important program being run by the Cyber Safety Project, educating our students on the importance of behaving in a safe and appropriate way online. There is also a series of parent webinars that have been sent out to all parents. I would urge you to watch the webinars and have a conversation with your children about their use of technology. Thank you to the families who have paid their $5 fee for the Cyber Safety Project session.

As I said in my letter to parents of year 5/6 students last week, we strongly caution against primary school aged children using social media and we strongly recommend that parents and carers closely monitor their child's use of technology.  In particular, we would suggest that no student of Silverton Primary School should be using TikTok, Instagram or Snapchat.  These apps are not considered safe for children.

We are looking forward to Student Led Conference Day on Thursday and allowing our students the opportunity to showcase their work to parents/carers and their teachers. Please remember no school classes this day, we will be running an OSHCare program. We will have a second-hand uniform sale set up on the green area all day on Thursday. A gold coin donation for uniform items would be appreciated if possible.

Just a reminder that student academic reports will be published on Sentral on Friday 21st July. NAPLAN results will also be sent out to parents of year 3 and year 5 students in the coming weeks. From the data I have already seen, our students have once again performed extremely well.

A reminder to all parent/carers that we do not allow soft drinks or Prime drinks at school. Please can you ensure that your children bring a water bottle to school but please do not send them with soft drinks or Prime.

We are also encouraging all students to bring rubbish free lunches to school. Please help us reduce the amount of plastic waste at school by providing lunches and snacks that do not have plastic wrapping or packaging. Sandwiches can be in plastic containers as well as fruit or vegetables in small containers.

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, our Parents Association fundraising goal is to reach $10,000 which will go towards upgrades to heating/cooling in our learning spaces and the installation of three new flag poles in our central courtyard. Our 2023 total is now up to $4,000 which is a great effort! If anyone is interested in volunteering their time to help with fundraising this year, please let the office know.

During Term Three we will be focusing on the values of Gratitude and Curiosity. Staff will be nominating students who demonstrate these values at school. It would be beneficial to have a conversation with your children about Gratitude and Curiosity or even ask them if they can explain these important values to you. As we have now developed our descriptions of each value, I will include a value in each newsletter to show you all.

Once again, thank you for your ongoing support.

Mark Pollard

Just a few reminders:

Please ensure that your children are wearing full school uniform every day at school. If you require any assistance with uniform, please contact the school.

Please ensure you children are arriving at school before 9:00am each day.

I would appreciate you talking to your child(ren) about our new school values and why it is so important to demonstrate our values every day at school.

Parents, please do not park in the front car park unless you are someone who uses the disabled park.

Assembly will now be held in the gym every Monday at 8:50am.

Year 7 Placement letters will come home today. If your child is going to a private/catholic school they WILL NOT receive a letter from Silverton, that school will contact you directly.
