2023 Newsletter #6

Dear Silverton families,

As we draw to the end of Semester One, I would like to start my newsletter by congratulating our students and staff on an excellent first half of the 2023 school year.

We have certainly achieved a lot as a school in just two terms. The introduction of our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support framework, creation of our new school values, two school camps, NAPLAN, a number of fantastic sporting achievements, Open Night and several House Days just to name a few highlights.

By now I’m sure a number of parents/carers would have noticed our Friendship Bench that sits in front of Learning Centre 5. We have called this the ‘Ms Prosser Friendship Bench’. It is a place that students can sit with their friends and reflect on their memories of Ms Prosser. One of Ms Prosser’s strengths was helping our little people resolve any disagreements, so we have also added one of her famous quotes, “we move on, we move forward”.

Congratulations to our students who participated in the Chess Tournament at Hampton Park PS on 25th May. A special mention to James Myer who was the highest ranked player of the tournament, congratulations James!

We had a number of students who represented Silverton at District Cross Country the 26th May. A great effort by all students and a special mention to Lennox Boustead who came 2nd in his race. Following District, we had several students who progressed to Division Cross Country on the 2nd June who all represented Silverton extremely well. Both Lennox Boustead and Andrea Basalo have now progressed to Regional Cross Country which was held today. Congratulations to you both on an amazing achievement!

On Thursday 8th June we had some students from St Elizabeths PS visiting us for the Marine Ambassadors program. They spent the day working with a group of Silverton students on an Environmental Project.

On 30th May, as part of Reconciliation Week, we had a group of students who attended the ‘Be a Voice for Generations’ event held at Dandenong City Council. The students had the opportunity to participate in a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by a local Bunurong Elder, learned about some artefacts and completed an arts and craft activity.  A highlight for our students was the Hip Hop dance performance by the Indigenous Youth Outreach Project.

Next Tuesday we will be holding our Performing Arts Showcase for the students involved in our Instrumental Program. Wishing all of our students and staff involved all the very best for what is sure to be a fantastic day! For those wishing to come along and watch the performances, LC4 students will be presenting from 9:30am – 11:00am and LC3 students from 11:30am – 1:30pm in the gym.

I would like to say congratulations to Miss Kumar and her partner who over the weekend, welcomed their baby boy. We can’t wait to meet little Kyree!

We are very excited to welcome back Mrs Wallis, who for the remainder of the year will be the classroom teacher for 56S.

For Semester Two, Ms Brooks will replace Mrs Fletcher as the classroom teacher for 56O on Mondays and Tuesdays. Whilst Mrs Fletcher will still be here at Silverton during Term Three, we just felt it was more suitable to make this change half way through the year, prior to Mrs Fletcher leaving to go on maternity leave later in the year.

A reminder to all parent/carers that we do not allow soft drinks or Prime drinks at school. Please can you ensure that your children bring a water bottle to school but please do not send them with soft drinks or Prime.

Next Term we are running an important program on Cyber Safety. We are asking for payment of $5 per child as a contribution towards the cost of this important program. Thank you to those families who have already made payment.

We are also encouraging all students to bring rubbish free lunches to school. Please help us reduce the amount of plastic waste at school by providing lunches and snacks that do not have plastic wrapping or packaging. Sandwiches can be in plastic Tupperware containers as well as fruit or vegetables in small containers.

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, our Parents Association fundraising goal is to reach $10,000 which will go towards upgrades to heating/cooling in our learning spaces and the installation of three new flag poles in our central courtyard. Our 2023 total is now up to $4,000 which is a great effort! If anyone is interested in volunteering their time to help with fundraising this year, please let the office know.

During Term Two we have been focusing on the value of Empathy. Staff have nominated students who have displayed empathy towards others at school. It would be beneficial to have a conversation with your children about empathy or even ask them if they can explain this important value to you.

Please note that Friday 23rd June is the last day of Term Two, school finishes at 2:30pm on this day.

Once again, thank you for your ongoing support.

Thank you,

Mark Pollard – Principal (Acting)

Just a few reminders:

Please ensure that your children are wearing full school uniform every day at school. If you require any assistance with uniform, please contact the school.

I would appreciate you talking to your child(ren) about our new school values and why it is so important to demonstrate our values every day at school.

Parents, please do not park in the front car park unless you are someone who uses the disabled park.

Assembly will now be held in the gym every Monday at 8:50am.
