Silverton Primary School's May e-Newsletter
Welcome back to Term 2 at Silverton. The children have made a very smooth transition back into learning and we are thrilled to have them back! It has been a busy Term 2 already with Grade 5 camp, State School Spectacular, Just Dance competition, LC 3 Maths incursion and a successful Open Night.
Parent Meetings with Reading / Writing Teachers
This week, teachers are sharing student’s learning goals in reading / writing with parents. If your meeting time doesn’t suit, please make sure you email the teacher back to arrange another time.
ONLINE NAPLAN (Tue 11/ Wed 12, Tue 18 / Wed 19 May)
Soon it will be NAPLAN time for our Grade 3 and 5 students, and just the thought of these tests can fill some children with panic. For some it’s the fear of the unknown or the expectation of performing at a certain level that can develop feelings of anxiety. As parents and teachers, we can help students alleviate these fears by supporting them with good preparation.
- Discuss their feelings and concerns Tests commonly bring out feelings of anxiety, so let them know that these feelings are normal. Listen to their concerns, show empathy and maintain a caring and positive attitude. More often than not talking about their fears can help to lessen these feelings.
- Encourage them ‘to give it a go’ and ‘to try their best’ NAPLAN is not supposed to be a test of the students but rather a check to make sure that Australia is providing the best educational outcomes for children. Encourage your child to give it a go and try their best.
- Prepare for the day Good preparation is the key. Going to bed early the night before, having a healthy breakfast to start the day. Make sure their laptops are charged and they have headphones. Keep stress levels low and arrive at school a little earlier. And don’t forget to wish them good luck!
Shhhhh! Mothers’ Day Stall
The school will have a Mother’s Day Stall on Thursday 6 and Friday 7 May. Bring along some money and a named bag to buy a surprise for your mum, grandmother or the favourite female in your life. Keep it a secret!
Annual Report
Our 2020 Annual Report was presented last Monday evening. The annual report provides a means for the school council to inform the community of what has been achieved and how the school is performing especially our achievements during a global pandemic. Providing information about schools helps the community hold schools, the system and the government accountable for improving student outcomes. An electronic version of the Annual Report is on our website here.
Staff
I would like to welcome Mr Alex Keng (Mon – Thurs) and Mrs Marta Koval (Friday) to Silverton. They are replacing Mrs Ana Kitharidis this Term while she is on leave.
On behalf of all the staff Happy Mother’s Day.
Take care
Amanda

Early Bird Reading
8:40am – 8:55am Tuesday – Friday in LC4
I’d like to remind all of our families about our early bird reading program. This program offers students the opportunity to read with other students from Silverton Primary School. The program is designed for the Grade 5/6 students to be the experts who listen to the Foundation – Grade 2 students read. This program runs Tues-Fri in Learning Centre 4 (to encourage the Foundation students to explore the school and feel comfortable in all Learning Spaces) from 8.40-8.55am. This program is supervised by a teacher each morning. We would love to see some more keen readers attending the program. See you there!!
