Silverton Primary School's October 2020 e-Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Silverton Primary School on the 30 October joined the rest of Australia to celebrate World Teachers’ Day to recognise the outstanding work and dedication of all teachers. This year's World Teachers' Day theme was 'Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future' reflecting the incredible contribution teachers have made in 2020. The coronavirus pandemic has asked teachers all around the world to change their routines and adjust how they teach, to ensure students have the support they need to continue learning during this difficult time. World Teachers' Day was an opportunity for our community to say 'thank you' to the teachers who continue to make such a difference to young lives in our school.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our fabulous admin, teacher aides and OSHcare, our technical support staff and our Assistant Principal, Mark Pollard, who all worked incredibly hard behind the scenes during remote learning to keep everything running smoothly and effectively.

Last week, we commemorated Remembrance Day as a school, pausing for the Last Post and a minute’s silence. Many of our students learned about the significance of Remembrance Day and reflected on the sacrifice that our service men and women have made for us over time.

Class Placements 2021

In the next few weeks, our teachers will begin creating classes for 2021. During this process the teachers consider friendship groups, student personalities, academic levels and many other factors when putting classes together. Our teachers take this process very seriously and put a lot of time and effort into ensuring the classes are put together in the best possible manner. If you have a request regarding the placement of your child into a class for 2021, please email me by Friday 27 November here

2021 Enrolments

We are currently in the process of organising grades and teaching staff for next year and it is very important for us to know our enrolment numbers for 2021.

If you know that your child will not be attending Silverton Primary School next year, could you please fill out this form 2021 Class Information of your 2021 intentions.  We thank you for your assistance

We are still accepting enrolments for Foundation/Prep 2021. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone who has not as yet returned their child’s enrolment form to do so ASAP.

2021 Foundation/Prep Transition

Our four online transition sessions were well attended. Congratulations to the parents for logging on and getting your child involved. Last week we started our onsite Transition program in small groups of 10 and will continue throughout Term 4.

Sun Smart School

Being a Sun Smart School, it is expected that all students are to wear a navy blue school hat. This hat is to be worn during P.E. / SPORT sessions and at recess and lunch times.

All children should have their own hat and it should be brought to school every day or it can be left at school. Hats can be purchased from the office for $17.95. Please ensure your child has the correct school hat as soon as possible and it is named.

School Review 2021, Term 1.

As apart of our School Review we have to showcase four highlights from our 2017 – 2020 Strategic Plan. Silverton staff have already brainstormed and discussed their thoughts and have come up with the following areas; Community Engagement, Student Voice / Agency, Student Wellbeing and Remote Learning. If any parents would like to contribute any other ideas or events that may fall under these areas please email me here.

School Council

At the moment School Council is reviewing Silverton’s No Bike Policy. Next week all parents will receive an email asking for their input about Cycling to and from school.

Staff Announcements

All the best to Mrs Jessica Ferreira who is now on family leave for the impending arrival of her second child.

We welcome Menghi Yu to Silverton as our 2021 LOTE teacher.

Thank you to all of our families who have continued to support the safety measures that we have put in place to ensure Silverton Primary stays COVID-19 free.

Take care

Amanda

Chess Tournaments by James 1/2E

During remote learning we did chess online. I played a lot of what would have been interschool tournaments. Only one of them for me was pretty hard, as there were a lot of strong players, but I finished in the top 5.

I competed in the Junior and Senior State Chess Competition. The senior competition was very challenging. Juniors finished 3rd overall and the Seniors finished 11th overall.

Next, I am going to compete in the National Chess Final. I am nervous but I know I will have lots of fun.
